History and formation
How the neighborhood took shape
Before urbanization, Tambaú was home to fishing families and holiday houses among coconut and cashew trees. UFPB studies report holiday visitors in the late nineteenth century and permanent housing from the 1930s. Sources disagree on when Epitácio Pessoa Avenue opened, but agree that the connection to the city center accelerated coastal settlement.
Hotel Tambaú, designed by Sérgio Bernardes, became a landmark of urban expansion. Sources place its inauguration in 1971, with differences regarding construction phases. Apartment buildings emerged in the 1960s; between 1977 and 1982, the CURA project expanded paving and sanitation.
