Hospitals and health insurance plans in João Pessoa: what to consider

Article 89 of 100 · September 10, 2026 · 1 min read · Destino João Pessoa

Brazil has more than 52 million health plan beneficiaries, but ANS does not release a closed breakdown by Northeastern capital.

João Pessoa combines a municipal and state public network — five hospitals owned by the City total 848 beds, including 123 ICU beds — with a significant supply of private hospitals and clinics affiliated with health insurance plans, concentrated mainly in Tambaú, Bessa and Manaíra, according to data already released by the City itself about its hospital network.

At the national level, the National Agency for Supplementary Health (ANS) recorded 52,884,500 beneficiaries of medical assistance plans in the country in July 2025, in addition to 34,539,577 enrolled in plans exclusively for dental coverage, according to the agency's own monthly bulletin. ANS also makes these figures available by state and by operator in its Beneficiary Information System (SIB), but no official, consolidated breakdown exclusively for the municipality of João Pessoa was found in the sources consulted — anyone wanting that level of detail can consult ANS's public dashboard directly.

In practice, anyone who moves to the city and depends on a health plan should check in advance the accredited network of hospitals and laboratories in João Pessoa with their own operator, since network coverage varies considerably among plans and not every operator with national reach has reference hospitals affiliated in the Paraíba capital. For those who depend on the SUS, the municipal network also serves as a reference for another 206 municipalities in Paraíba, which can mean greater demand at urgent and emergency care units.
