Cost of living in João Pessoa compared to other capitals

João Pessoa has one of the cheapest basic food baskets in the country, but prices have been rising above national inflation.
João Pessoa often appears in DIEESE surveys as one of the capitals with the cheapest basic food basket in Brazil — in January 2025 the institute placed the city among those with the lowest value in the country, behind only a few other capitals, according to a note released by DIEESE itself and republished by Portal Correio and the newspaper A União. This does not mean price stability, however: between January 2024 and January 2025 the value of the basic basket in João Pessoa rose 10.52%, an increase driven by food items, according to the same DIEESE report.
In terms of income, IBGE recorded a per capita GDP of R$ 34,106.06 for João Pessoa in 2023 (IBGE Cidades), a lower figure than capitals in the South and Southeast, which helps explain why the absolute cost of living tends to be lower — but it also reflects lower wages in the region.
Day to day, housing and eating out still weigh less on the budget than in larger capitals: local real estate websites report rents for two-bedroom apartments in sought-after neighborhoods such as Manaíra and Tambaú in the range of R$ 1,500 to R$ 2,500 a month, while in neighborhoods farther from the coast prices drop considerably. One caveat applies: since there is no single, nationally comparable official methodology for "total cost of living" by capital, broad comparisons should be read with caution, always prioritizing official item-by-item indicators such as DIEESE's basic food basket.
