Practical visitor guide: how many days to stay and how to plan the itinerary

A 3-to-5-day itinerary combining beaches, the Historic Center and a boat trip, with tide tips.

To see the essentials of João Pessoa without rushing, the itinerary most recommended by local operators and guides runs between 3 and 5 days. In 3 days it's possible to cover the Tambaú and Cabo Branco waterfront, take the boat trip to the natural pools of Picãozinho and visit the Historic Center; with 5 days, visitors have time to include beaches in the south of the city, such as Jacarapé and Coqueirinho, or a day trip to Cabedelo, on the north coast.

The trip to the Picãozinho natural pools is the most sought-after program and depends directly on the tide: catamarans leave from Tambaú Beach around 8 a.m., arrive just before low tide and return as the water is already rising, in a trip lasting about three hours. Since the tide schedule varies every day, it's best to check the Brazilian Navy's Tide Table for the Port of Cabedelo — the reference port for the region — before booking the trip, preferring weeks of full moon or new moon, when the tide reaches its lowest levels.

In the Historic Center, it's worth setting aside at least one morning or afternoon to walk through Praça Antenor Navarro, Praça de São Frei Pedro Gonçalves and the Praça Dom Adauto complex. Nearby are the Paraíba Museum of Sacred Art, housed in an 18th-century colonial mansion, and the Janete Costa Museum of Paraíba Crafts; the João Pessoa City Museum, dedicated to the capital's history and opened in 2021, is located on Praça da Independência.

As for the time of year, the period from September to January is the driest and most recommended, with calmer seas and less rain; from April to July, rains are more frequent, which can affect boat trips and outdoor walks.
