Seafood and fish: the tradition of beach stands

Fresh fish and seafood sustain everything from simple waterfront stands to João Pessoa's most award-winning restaurants.
João Pessoa's relationship with the sea shows up strongly at the table: fish and seafood are the stars both at the waterfront's informal stands and at the city's most renowned restaurants. The starting point of this chain is the Mercado do Peixe de Tambaú, run by the city hall, which receives fish such as cioba, grouper, pargo, arabaiana and shrimp daily, coming from local artisanal fishing and neighboring states such as Rio Grande do Norte, Alagoas and Ceará.
Along the waterfront, kiosks and beach stands usually offer fried fish, shrimp and seafood-based dishes in a relaxed format, with tables facing the sea in Cabo Branco, Tambaú and Manaíra — a more affordable and informal experience than that of restaurants with a fixed menu.
At the other end of this tradition are establishments already well established in local reviews, such as Camarada Camarão, at Mag Shopping in Manaíra, which has specialized in shrimp and fish dishes since 2005, along with names like Mangai, Tábua de Carne and Nau, cited among the city's reference restaurants for seafood and Northeastern cuisine.
This combination — an organized fish market, informal beach stands and award-winning restaurants — is one of the reasons why fish-based gastronomy remains one of João Pessoa's biggest culinary attractions, both for those looking for a quick meal on the sand and for those wanting a more elaborate experience.
