Open-air markets and public markets: shopping to cook

Article 149 of 100 · October 07, 2026 · 1 min read · Destino João Pessoa

João Pessoa maintains public markets and open-air fairs, with heavier traffic in the early morning hours.

Anyone staying in a house or apartment and wanting to cook will find in João Pessoa a network of public markets and fairs. According to Paraíba Business, in an article from September 12, 2026 citing materials from the City Hall, the Central, Tambaú, Torre and Mangabeira public markets were operating normally that Saturday, and the busiest time tends to be in the early morning hours. The same article lists, among the craft spaces, the Mercado de Artesanato Paraibano and the Feirinha de Tambaú.

On the days and hours of each open-air fair, no updated official City Hall calendar was found among the sources consulted. It is therefore advisable to check with the João Pessoa City Hall before visiting. Old data circulates online and should not be taken as reliable.

There is also the Feira Móvel do Produtor, a City Hall initiative run through the Urban Development Department (Sedurb), which brings family-farming and creative-entrepreneurship products to the city's neighborhoods. The June 2025 schedule, released on June 3 of that year, included stops such as Bessa, Bancários, Altiplano Cabo Branco and Brisamar, with days and hours that vary by location. Since the schedule changes every month, it only serves as an example of how it works, not as a current agenda.

General tips: go early, bring bags and cash or confirm accepted payment methods, and prefer seasonal produce. Fish and meat require care with storage, especially in the heat, so bring ice if the trip to your accommodation is long.
